Captains Report for 2015-16

Kevin Turner

I played golf!  To expand…

My thanks to Jan Mudele my mixed partner for putting up with me and a special thanks to Ingrid & Peter Long for organising the Mixed matches and of course the fabulous trip to Bruges in July.

I look forward to playing again next year.

SP is a very social club and we have enjoyed many entertaining and fun events during the year.

Christmas lunches are now a sell-out event with the Panto being a highlight. I did enjoy dressing up but not as much as Tony & Stuart, well done girls!

Captains Sunday lunches have been very well supported with some 120 people attending the “Sinatra” lunch in August. Thank you all.

A great success was the Murder Mystery evening and a lot of fun was had at this year’s Concert on the Course. Freddie Mercury didn’t look too well but then he shouldn’t!

Thanks to John Mack, Juli Carpenter, Arun and Ian and their teams and everyone else that has made a wonderful contribution.

I attended 11 selection meetings and four playing in rounds which resulted in 43 new members joining over the year.

I had the pleasure of partnering Elaine Lopategui our Lady Captain in six mixed challenges which were played in a competitive manner and were lots of fun too.

Elaine has been a wonderful Captain, given me great support and has been a credit to this club and her family. And she is always smiling.

Thanks Captain.

We should all be proud of the Junior section of our Club. It was a pleasure to play in the Adult & Junior Fayre. We need to care for our Juniors and give them every encouragement we can.

Sam Jones joined at the back end of last year and has created a fabulous academy for the Juniors. The standard of golf is quite incredible and they have had a very successful season. I am sure several juniors will develop into adult members in time. Well done Sam.

Our Seniors section go’s from strength to strength and thanks to Trevor Davis, Chris Hurren and John Reeves – winners all.

A great job achieved by Paul Rudkin and his team. The courses are playing really well and I know Paul is always looking for ways to improve our playing experience. Visiting teams and players have been extremely complimentary this year on the condition of both courses.

The Past Captains of which I am nearly a member is very active and playing is like “A Christmas surprise as you never know what you are going to get”. But the matches are competitively played and always fun. A special thanks to Doug Stoker and Colin Murray for being gifted Father Christmas’s.

The Club V The Captains team is a highlight of the Captains calendar where the Capts and VC’s of other Clubs join the Capt. and play for bragging rights against the Club team lead by our VC for the Horder Deeble Trophy. I can’t remember the result.

My thanks to Nick Balding, Tony Lopategui and Steve Lennell the organisers of the friendly matches. We played 23 matches home and away and that takes some organising. Our results have been satisfactory but most importantly other Clubs can see how good SP is. We are always complemented on our Club and the courses. A comment from an away Capt. – “we can only aspire to Sundridge Park!!”

The International matches have taken on a new format and my thanks to the Captains of the teams. Fought to the very final putt but always a “well-done” through gritted teeth at the end.

The AM AM continues to go from strength to strength and we should offer thanks to Rose & Alex Yazdani, Martin Clark and Rob Sargent for all their hard work by magically generating funds and new sponsors to this wonderful event. Thank you and please keep up the great work.

Along with Guest day, Pros day, Mayors day, Artisans day, Captains Artisans prize day and Captains Prize there is the all-important Capt/Pro challenges.

This year Stuart, John, Sam and JD played with me in 40 matches. We won some, halved some and lost too many!

Very strange how so many golfers keep their A game for this event!

It really has been a pleasure to have played with such a cross section of members, some I knew, others not quite so but now are firm friends. Win loose or half they have been such an important part of the year. My sincere thanks to everyone who played and I am sorry there were not enough Sundays in the year to play more.

Oh and we had some excellent lunches too.

The winners of the playoff were Johnny Mack & Bill Wardrope with a fabulous 44 pts!

The Club committee has been a vibrant group and I would like to thank them all for their input and involvement in the Club not to mention devoting their time each and every month. My thanks to Elaine Lopategui, Colin Murray, Chris Hurren, Richard Toogood, Ingrid Long, Stuart Dowsett, Tony Lopategui, Sam Jones, David Brenes and John Mack. And of course Simon Wood and Ben Riley.

Simon has worked very hard on the golf days both for the Members and Societies. Well done and thanks.

And of course I attended the monthly Board Meetings which are never dull, often long and quite vociferous.

Every Board Member dedicates their time, and there is a lot of it, to this Club and the Members.

I should like to express my thanks to Juli Carpenter, Peter Long & Eddie Scott, who have all completed their 3 year (sentence) sorry tenure, Doug Stoker who resigned earlier in the year but happily is still giving welcome advice and John Reeves & Don Harrington will continue to serve for a further two years. David Fyffe has generously stood again for election, which I appreciate and welcome.

Ben Riley works tirelessly along with his team in the office, Simon, Christine, Jo and Lorna and not forgetting Carol who recently left us.

Where would we be without them?

And of course the man that has held everyone together and in good order, our Chairman, Richard Browne. A sterling job for the last three years. Thank you Richard.

In conclusion I would like to say how privileged I have been to have had the honour of being Captain of SPGC for the past 12 months. It is an experience I shall treasure and never forget.

Thank you

KAT
